Roundabout

Roundabouts are becoming more popular as an intersection control device.  Recently the City of Mendota Heights completed the first roundabout in the City.  It is located at the intersection of Mendota Heights Road and Visitation Drive.  The project was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), federal money commonly referred to as the 2009 “Economic Stimulus Bill.”

Since roundabouts are new to Mendota Heights, here are some simple rules to follow to safely negotiate your way through the roundabout:

1. When approaching a roundabout, slow down and get into the appropriate lane.
2. Yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk as they have the right of way.
3. When entering a roundabout, turn right only (traffic only travels counter-clockwise in the roundabout), yield to vehicles already in the roundabout (they have the right of way), and merge into the traffic flow when it is safe.
4. Continue through the roundabout until you reach your exit, signal you exit using your right turn signal, safely exit the roundabout. Do not stop or pass in a roundabout.
5. If an emergency vehicle approaches, exit immediately at the first exit on your tight, and then pull over and stop. Do not stop in the roundabout.
